Biography

About Mark

Mark van der Feen (1972) studied at the Conservatory of Amsterdam where Rob van Bavel was one of his coaches. In 1998 he graduated at an outstanding level as a solo pianist. Mark has participated in competitions in the Netherlands, France and Switzerland and has won awards including a second prize at the Classic FM piano competition (1998), twice the Steinway prize at the Montreux International Piano Competition (1999, 2002) and various audience awards.

Mark performs on different stages and with a variety of groups. He has a permanent position as pianist in the New Generation Big Band, an 18-man band that was recently awarded the “Gouden Greep 2006” for its work with the well-known duo Pete Philly en Perquisite. They just released their new album in march 2007. He also plays in the saxophonist Slobodan Trkulja’s combo, often with musicians such as Jesse van Ruller. Besides this, he regularly encounters other jazzmusicians like Paul van der Feen and Benjamin Herman.

In addition Mark has his own repertoire that he performed at the end of 2006 in various cities and will be performing this year in several places in the Netherlands. During these piano solo concerts he plays ‘Rhapsody in Blue’ as part of his programme and he’s a wizard at combining classical music with jazz.

Mark has also worked and performed with Louis van Dijk, Peter Beets, Paula Morelenbaum, Lilian Viera and René Groothof (in the theatre project “Beer is los”).
